Louis-Ernest BARRIAS (1841 - 1905) & SUSSE FRÈRES (foundry) - Lot 183
Louis-Ernest BARRIAS (1841 - 1905) & SUSSE FRÈRES (foundry) Nature unveiling itself before Science Original model created in 1889. Bronze proof with nuanced golden patina. Early edition cast by Susse Frères Paris. Signed, marked PJ and founder's stamp. Height: 24 cm History: the original model of this sculpture, an allegory of Nature represented as a young woman lifting her veil, was commissioned in 1889 to adorn the Faculty of Medicine in Bordeaux. After executing this first version in white marble, Louis Ernest Barrias was asked to design a second, polychrome version for the grand staircase of the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers in Paris (now in the Musée d'Orsay under inventory number RF 1409). These works were so successful that numerous editions were subsequently produced, varying in size and color.
