MAZARINADES] - . . In-4, 58 Mazarinades, contemporary marbled fawn calf, double gilt thread on covers, ornate ribbed spine, remaining headpieces. MOREAU 3814. The text presents a political remontrance affirming the principle of a monarchy in which a single sovereign holds authority, and warning against the excessive influence of private individuals on royal power. There are several editions of this text, with variations in form and content, some anonymous and others enriched with appendices. The supposed author is President Le Coigneux, according to rumors reported by Guy Patin. MOREAU 1147. The text presents a very violent pamphlet from the Fronde, attacking both the Parlement and a prince, with a prophetic tone announcing their downfall and the people's vengeance. The author is identified as Portail, a councillor in Parliament, involved in the political conflicts and polemical publications of the period. The text also evokes the legal proceedings linked to its distribution, the controversies surrounding its attribution, and the contrasting judgments passed on Portail, sometimes described as a skilful and eloquent writer, sometimes in a highly disparaging manner in other pamphlets. Paris, composed by Misère and printed in Calamité, 1649, 72 pages. MOREAU 533. The text presents a satirical pamphlet featuring eight peasants representing different regions of France, who formulate remonstrances in the form of political articles. They propose various reforms affecting the nobility, the army, foreigners, finance, the Church and the organization of the State, often in a critical and mocking tone. The pamphlet is distinguished by its sharp wit and political reflections, denouncing abuses and injustice in the operation of the monarchy and its institutions. It is also appreciated for the quality of its style and its rarity. MOREAU 2406. This pamphlet comments on and extends the Manuel, denouncing flattery and the excesses of royal power. It criticizes absolute power, defends a better political framework and the idea of representative assemblies, while attacking financial abuses and partisanship. Despite its polemical tone, it is considered well-written and relevant, without being particularly rare. Paris, Arnould Cottinet, 1649, 8 pages. MOREAU 790. There is another edition, also 8 pages long and of the same date, but with no place name. This is apparently the one Saint-Ange took from Robert Sara (Mascurat, p. 636). Naudé, however, quotes the title of the play inaccurately. It should not have read Contribution du bon citoyen. A good, vigorous pamphlet that it's always wise to pick up when you find it, even if it's not very serious. Paris, Arnould Cottinet, 1649. MOREAU 1106.The text describes a multi-part 1649 pamphlet and its various editions. It points out that the first speech, considered the best, criticizes the political situation after the events of 1648, and in particular blames Mazarin and the court for unworthy behavior and a lack of religious respect. The rest, attributed to Dom Pierre de Saint-Joseph, satirically denounces the financial abuses, corruption and excesses of power. MOREAU 3732, etc.
