BOUCHER, Jean] - De Justa Henricii Tertii Abdicatione e Fran - Lot 343
BOUCHER, Jean] - De Justa Henricii Tertii Abdicatione e Francorum regno. Libri Quatuor. Paris, Nicolas Nivelles, 1589. In-8, (10) ff, 288 pp, (22) ff, yellowed paper, 19th-century half calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt thread. PEIGNOT I, 45. LELONG 19 034. First edition, preferable to that of 1591 (Peignot). This extremely violent book against Henri III was nevertheless approved by the Paris Faculty of Theology. Jean Boucher, former rector of the University of Paris, then parish priest of Saint-Benoît, calls for sedition and rejoices in Jacques Clément's act. Alongside the reasons he gave the Church for deposing the King, the people had no less than eight grievances against a perfidious King, dissipator of the public treasury, enemy of the fatherland, cruel, useless to the State, tainted by shameful habits, guilty of all vices, unworthy, finally, by his own admission.
