MERCIER, Louis-Sébastien - L'Homme sauvage. Histoire traduit - Lot 314
MERCIER, Louis-Sébastien - L'Homme sauvage. Histoire traduite de.... Paris, Vve Duchesne, 1767. In-12, 310 pp. Bayle on faux-titre, fawn marbled calf, smooth spine decorated.
HARTIG and SOBOUL 59. First edition. It follows fairly closely the text by J. G. Pfeil (1732-1800), his German inspiration and author of Der Wild, which appeared in the collection Versuch in moralischen Erzählungen (1757). Under the fictional guise of a travel report by an Englishman recounting the tale of an Indian, the novel evokes the misdeeds of the Spanish in Peru and the perfidy of the Europeans. This novel, whose theme is the unhappy incestuous love of a brother and sister made impossible by the demands of civilized society, has been seen as Chateaubriand's source for René. This apology for the state of nature, praising savages whether anthropophagous or practicing incest, was banned as soon as it was published.
