MÉRÉ, Chevalier de - Letters. Paris, Denis Thierry & Cla - Lot 232
MÉRÉ, Chevalier de - Letters. Paris, Denis Thierry & Claude Barbin, 1682. 2 vols. in-12, (4) ff. 360 pp. (6) ff. pp. 361-710, (1) f., crossed-out inscriptions on titles, contemporary granulated brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated.
First edition. These letters are very interesting for our knowledge of the society of the time. Some are addressed to Ménage, the Duchesse de Lesdiguières, Balzac, Mme de Maintenon, Pascal, Ninon de Lenclos and Mlle de Scudéry. One of these letters recounts a conversation between the author and the Duc de La Rochefoucauld, author of the Maximes. It also includes the tale of the Matron of Ephesus, which is treated quite differently from Saint-Evremond's.
