MÉRÉ, Chevalier de - The Agremens. Speech to Madame ***. Par - Lot 231
MÉRÉ, Chevalier de - The Agremens. Speech to Madame ***. Paris, Denys Thierry & Claude Barbin, 1677. In-12, (2) f., 152 pp. in granulated brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated. TCH IV, 687. First edition of the first of three speeches published under this title. The others appeared the same year, dealing with Esprit and Conversation. The Chevalier de Méré was a generation's teacher of propriety. Born in 1607, he became familiar with his favorite themes by frequenting the salons of Hôtel de Rambouillet, Mme de Sablé and Mme de Longueville. He was a dear friend of Pascal. He reconciled the refinements of worldly life and high moral aspirations with rare happiness.
