Amsterdam and Danzig, Jansson Waesberghe, 1695. In-8, (8) ff, 847 pp, 78 copper-engraved emblems in text, contemporary ivory vellum with flaps. ALLUT p. 162. PRAZ 423. LANDWEHR no. 55. First Latin edition of the work published in French in 1682 under the title : La Philosophie des images, composée d'un ample recueil de devises, & du jugement de tous les ouvrages qui ont été faits sur cette matière. The first 94 pages contain the judgments of fifty authors who have dealt with symbols. The mottos are classified under 78 headings, each illustrated with an emblem: coelum et astra, sol, aurora et lumen, planetae et constellationes, luna, astra sub figuris cum humanis, ignes erratici, etc. They are given in Latin and English. They are given in Latin and French, followed by a commentary. As Allut points out, this edition has a much richer iconography than the first, which featured only a few woodcuts.
