In verse, he depicts a variety of characters: the coquette, the marriageable girl, the financier, the abbot, the swordsman, the peasant, the village judge, and so on. Many of his gallant poems are titled after games: colin maillard, trente et un, les cartes, les dames, le bâtonnet, le billard, le trictrac, le toton, le volant, la paume, les dés, la boule, les quilles, etc.
