BECKFORD, William] - Vathek, Arabian tale. Paris, Poinçot, 1 - Lot 631
BECKFORD, William] - Vathek, Arabian tale. Paris, Poinçot, 1787. In-8, 190 pp. without Poinçot catalog leaf, paper a little yellowed, several russets, red half-marble with corners, smooth spine decorated, gilt head (Ch. LANOÉ).
First French edition recognized by Beckford. Vathek's original text, written in French in 1782, is lost. In 1786, the Reverend Samuel Henley published an English translation, the first known edition. In 1786, Jean David Levade translated it into French and published it in Lausanne, but Beckford disavowed it. The following year, it was published again by Poinçot, revised by François Verdeil, Louis Sébastien Mercier and Beckford himself.
