ZACHARIE DE LISIEUX] - The Gyges Gallus by P. Firmian. Tran - Lot 456
ZACHARIE DE LISIEUX] - The Gyges Gallus by P. Firmian. Translated by P. Antoine de Paris, Capuchin preacher. Paris, Denis Thierry, 1663. In-12, frontispiece, (11) ff. of which the last is blank, 441 pp. in ivory vellum.
LEVER 178. First Latin edition in 1658; first French edition. The ''Gigès Gallus'' enabled him to make himself invivable; Zacharie de Lisieux imagines he received it belongs to Father Zacharie's satirical period. Gygès had received a ring, a similar gift that enabled him to cross walls and become a piquant and unexpected painter of manners: the author's verve is used in turn against fianciers, moneyed marriages, hypocrisy and anything else that could lend itself to criticism.'' (Julien-Eymard, D.L.F., 1027).
