Henri Michaux (1899-1984), born in Belgium and naturalized in France, was a major creative figure of the 20th century, at the crossroads of literature and the visual arts. Based in Paris, he developed a deeply personal body of work, on the bangs of established movements. Close to Surrealism in certain respects, but never officially associated with it, Michaux's drawings and paintings explore an inner world of constantly shifting signs, rhythms and forms. From the 1950s onwards, his experiments with mescaline influenced a graphic production marked by a proliferation of strokes and an almost calligraphic style of writing. His plastic work, often in ink, is characterized by free gestures and a search for visual equivalents of psychic states. Between writing and image, Henri Michaux invented a singular language, in which the sign becomes the vehicle for an intimate, poetic exploration of the mind.
