Maurice UTRILLO (1883-1955) - Lot 41
Maurice UTRILLO (1883-1955) Rue de Sannois, circa 1937 Oil on canvas signed lower right. On reverse: Twice numbered 320. Stamp of Galerie O. Petrides. Label bearing number 110. 37.5 x 45 cm Provenance: According to the current owner, the painting was acquired by his father-in-law, Pierre H., in the early 1970s. He had been contacted by Madame Jannick RIVIÈRE, a friend of the H. family and a member of the French Resistance in Lyon during the Second World War. Indeed, Laure MOULIN, Jean MOULIN's sister, whom she knew well, wanted to sell through her this work by Maurice UTRILLO, which she had inherited from her brother. Our painting depicts a street in Sannois, a town some fifteen kilometers from Paris in the Val-d'Oise region. The painter visited this area on several occasions, notably during stays at a local clinic on Avenue Rozée, in an attempt to cure his alcoholism. There, he developed a repertoire of characteristic motifs: silent streets, rendered facades, uncluttered perspectives... which he used in numerous compositions. Sannois thus inspired several works from his "white period" (1910-1914), but also from his "colored period" (1922-1955), during which light tones gave way to brighter hues. Our painting belongs to this late phase. It is representative of Utrillo's style, oscillating between a kind of naivety in treatment and a sustained attention to architectural structures. It conveys an atmosphere of calm, removed from the hustle and bustle. We would like to thank the Comité Utrillo for confirming the authenticity of this painting. A certificate of authenticity may be issued by the Comité, at the purchaser's expense.
