Gabriel LOPPÉ (1825-1913) - Lot 18
Gabriel LOPPÉ (1825-1913) La Pierre à Bérenger, Mont-Blanc massif, July 16, 1862. Charcoal and gouache Signed lower right "G. Loppé, located and dated lower left 16 7 62, Pierre a Berenger 54 x 47 cm. Restoration. Provenance : - The artist's family, then by descent. We would like to thank Mrs. Anne Friang-Loppé, direct descendant of the artist and President of the Friends of Gabriel Loppé and the Gabriel Loppé Committee, for the information she kindly provided. As early as the 19th century, mountaineers traversing the Mont-Blanc massif used the "Pierre à Bérenger", located on the left bank of the Talèfre, overlooking the Tacul glacier and the Mer de Glace, as a landmark. Reaching an altitude of 2,466 meters, this boulder provided natural shelter for mountaineers on their expeditions. A hut was first built here, before being replaced a few years later by the nearby Couvercle refuge.
