François GALL (1912-1987) - Lot 4
François GALL (1912-1987) Eugénie and her daughter Marie-Lize, circa 1947 Oil on canvas signed lower right. 22 x 27 cm. From the moment he met Eugénie in 1946, between the bouquinistes and the Pont Neuf, freedom, light and happiness entered the life of Gàll, who became a naturalized French citizen in1949. Abandoning wartime and social subjects, she became his favorite model, along with their two daughters. This first maternity was painted on location in the summer of '47, in the small plot of land known as "la vigne" (the vineyard) opposite his parents-in-law's house in Martel-en-Quercy, before returning to the attic in the rue Dauphine, which had become too small, until '48. This painting is part of a series sketched in various locations, including the Île de France, the seaside and the Lot. The young mother is often depicted wearing her first white straw hat, with its curled brim, a gift from her husband for the arrival of the baby. 1949, 1st solo exhibition at Durand Ruel, who had also chosen a number of maternities. In this photo, the artist shows little Marie-Lize in her mother's arms. We would like to thank Madame Marie-Lize Gall, the artist's daughter, for confirming the authenticity of our painting and for the information she kindly provided.
