SCARRON, Paul - Typhon, or The Gigantomachy. Burlesque poem. - Lot 339
SCARRON, Paul - Typhon, or The Gigantomachy. Burlesque poem. Dedié a monseigneur l'éminentissime cardinal Mazarin. Paris, Toussainct Quinet, 1644. In-4, (2) ff. including front engraved by H. David, 20, 36, 14, 13 pp. (1) f., paper a little yellowed, some light spotting and russetting, garnet calf, spine with ornate nerves. TCH V, 706. First edition. The first of Scarron's great burlesque poems, which he dedicated to Mazarin but did not receive the recognition he expected. Its subject is the revolt of the giants against the Olympian gods, led by the giant Typhon. The gods were overcome by such panic that, to escape him, they disguised themselves as animals or vegetables.
