EQUICOLA , Mario - Apologie de Marius Equicolus, gentilhomme italian, contre les mesdisantz de la nation Françoise traduicte de latin en François. Paris, Vincent Sertenas, 1550. Pet. in-8, (72) ff, last two blank, heraldic stamp on title, no binding, 18th c. paper covers. BRUNET II, 1034. First edition of Michel Roté's translation of the Pro Gallis apologia, published in Ferrara in 1509. Dedicated to Anne d'Este, Duchess of Guise, daughter of Renée de France. Equicola, who had supported the ventures of Charles VIII and Louis XII in Italy, takes up the themes that, since the reign of Charles V, have been developed in the debate over the cultural primacy of France or Italy. Michel Roté has enriched his translation with variants and personal notes, demonstrating his commitment to Francophilia. Equicola, who had been in the service of Isabella d'Este at the Court of Mantua since 1508, became famous for his Libro de natura de amore (1525), one of the most famous treatises on love written during the Renaissance.
