Georges MATHIEU (1921 - 2012) - Lot 238
Georges MATHIEU (1921 - 2012) Composition, 1961 Graphite pencil and red crayon on paper, mounted on cardboard (oxidation, stains). Signed, dated and dedicated lower right "Pour Jean-Paul Darmsteter, en petit souvenir de Mathieu, 61". Annotated on verso "Pour M. et Mme Pierre Maurel, Jean-Paul Darmsteter. Genève, December 9, 1967". Dim. 20 x 29 cm. Note : Jean-Paul Darmsteter (1924 - 2018) is a poet and radio reporter from Geneva, of French and Belgian descent. He joined Radio Genève in 1945, and became particularly well-known after broadcasting a report with his colleague Georges-André Zehr. Together, they demonstrated that an airplane could land on a glacier, in this case the Dôme du Goûter on the Mont-Blanc plateau, at an altitude of almost 4,000 meters. After leaving the airwaves in 1965, he went on to become head of communications at the World Health Organization's European Office in Copenhagen. Alongside his journalistic activities, he has developed a body of poetic work marked by the publication of two collections, Quadritude and Temps suspendu, published by l'Age d'Homme. In 2006, France awarded him the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
