The eruption of Vesuvius, Italy, circa 1822
A souvenir fan from the Grand Tour, this double sheet of painted skin shows a night view of the explosive eruption of Vesuvius, overlooking the glowing bay of Naples, with onlookers contemplating the spectacle.
Vesuvius erupted several times in the early 19th century. The one on October 22, 1822, was characterized by projections into the atmosphere. The Musée Carnavalet in Paris has an illustrated fan of this eruption, seen during the day (inv. EV360).
The reverse is painted in gold with flowers.
Mounted in pierced gilded brass, the plumes enriched with half-turquoises.
