Josiah MARTIN (1843 - 1916) Portrait of Maori King Tawhiao wearing a Kiwi feather coat, New Zealand, circa 1880. Albumen print mounted on card and titled in ink "type maori-New Zealand". 20.2 x 14.7 cm The portrait was taken at John Mayall's New Bond Street studio during Tawhiao's trip to London in 1884. A similar example is in the Museum of New Zealand (inv. 0.031358). On the back of the box: Collection of Maori feather boxes from the Aukland Museum, New Zealand, circa 1880. 15 x 20 cm Provenance: The Philip Kulpa Collection, Aukland, New Zealand.
