V). Paris, Augustin Courbé, 1647. 5 vol. in-8, pl. maroquin rouge, triple fil. dor. on covers, ornate ribbed spine, int. dent. tr. dor. (HARDY). TCH V, 945. This is the last early edition of the complete text of L'Astrée, which was not republished until 1925 by Vaganay. It includes the only illustration produced for this pastoral, apart from one by Gravelot in 1733 for an abridged version. It is taken from the 1633 edition and is the work of Daniel Rabel (1578-1637), a renowned painter and engraver who painted the portrait of Anne of Austria and executed 94 drawings for the Court ballets. His inspiration here is reminiscent of the Ecole de Fontainebleau. Each volume includes a frontispiece engraved by Daret, a portrait of Honoré d'Urfé repeated in volumes I, II, III and IV, a portrait of Astrée, repeated in volumes I, II, III and V, sixty f1gures on pl. page by Daniel Rabel engraved by Michel Lasne and Charles David. Missing the portrait of Astrée in volume IV, of Bathazar Baro in volume V.
