MARAIS Jean (Jean Villain-Marais, dit) [Cherbourg, 1913 - Ca - Lot 133
MARAIS Jean (Jean Villain-Marais, dit) [Cherbourg, 1913 - Cannes, 1998], French actor. Autograph manuscript of 7 pages in-4° in blue pen. A signed autograph letter, 1 page in-4°, is stapled to the front of the manuscript. "This work has been finished for a long time. I've been waiting for you to ask for it. I am sending it to you, hoping that my replies will be long enough". Jean Marais is probably answering a questionnaire. He responds by numbering his answers. He talks about poetry: "If I have a gift for poetry, it undoubtedly comes from my lack of culture and my desire to remain clean and faithful to the perfection of my work"; "Poetry, if I dared to define it, would be elegance itself. He talks about his acting and his roles: "I would almost always like to play roles that are not for me - for example, in tragedy, women's roles are more beautiful than ours". In his final answer, he defines himself as "hard work and the desire to please the people who matter to me."
