KESSEL Joseph [Clara, Argentina, 1898 - Avernes, 1979], Fren - Lot 92
KESSEL Joseph [Clara, Argentina, 1898 - Avernes, 1979], French writer and journalist. Important set of 9 autograph letters signed and 6 autograph cards signed, all addressed to Mlle Bergson Jeanne, a friend of the Kessel couple. Written between 1921 and 1930. In his various letters, Kessel gives news of himself and his wife "Sandi", who was in poor health and died of tuberculosis. He often apologizes for postponing his visit, or for not having had time to reply to Jeanne's letters. "I'm unforgivable for not having answered your kind letter sooner, but you're so good that you'll forgive me. Friends celebrated my prize so well that it lasted a month and I never got my head back." Letters following the death of his wife: "I'm still crushed by grief, but life is gradually returning to me"; "I'm still too crushed to be able to talk to you. [...] I want you to know that she suffered a great deal during the last month, but that her end was very sweet and that she fell asleep telling us: see you tomorrow."
