ROLAND DE LA PLATIÈRE Jean-Marie [Thizy, 1734 - Bourg-Beaudo - Lot 67
ROLAND DE LA PLATIÈRE Jean-Marie [Thizy, 1734 - Bourg-Beaudouin, 1793], French politician, Minister of the Interior in 1792, committed suicide upon learning of his wife's arrest. Signed letter to M. Duméril. Paris, October 29, 1792, Year One of the French Republic. 1 1/2 pages in-4°. "The sentiments and principles you announce, Monsieur, are proof of your civic-mindedness and enlightenment, and can only earn you the esteem and trust of all your fellow citizens. WHEN ONE KNOWS, AS YOU DO, THE NECESSITY AND PRICE OF INSTRUCTION, ONE IS WELL DIGNITABLE TO TAKE ON THE CARE OF PROMOTING IT [...] I must regret that you were not aware of a circular letter dated September 1st concerning public assemblies and readings, which I propose to institute everywhere, as the quickest and surest means of spreading knowledge among this people. You would have found your own ideas there... I shall hasten to send you these various papers published by the government, and intended to support its salutary views for the maintenance of the Republic".
