Hunting and garden scene - Lot 210
Hunting and garden scene Flemish tapestry, Oudenaarde. Circa 1600. Woven in wool and silk. 2.73 x 4.38 cm This charming tapestry illustrates a hunting and garden scene. Composed of numerous figures set against a lush landscape, the tapestry is in fact highly symmetrical. In the foreground, on either side of the composition, are two stately couples accompanied by their children. Their gestures direct our gaze to a background of bow-wielding hunters and couples engaged in various activities. They are at the gateway to a well-ordered garden, opening onto a palace that seems to blend French and Flemish architecture. The association of hunting and love takes on a symbolic significance, supported by the monumental figures that make up the border. The border features architectural motifs, allegories, grotesques and vases filled with fruit and flowers. It has retained some of its original colors and border. It shows wear in the silks and old restorations. It is reduced in height and probably in height. The lower border is partially folded under the lining. Fold approx. 30 cm
