From 1827 onwards, David d'Angers began a highly unusual production of small wax portraits on slate, mainly of his artist friends and family. Modeled in wax or clay, usually in three or four hours, details are neglected, and the graceful execution takes nothing away from the harmony of the face.
Probably executed in 1828, this portrait was created shortly after Eugène DEVERIA's triumph at the 1827 Salon, with the Naissance d'Henri IV.
