Against two books entitled La Morale pratique des Jésuites, and l'Esprit de M. Arnauld. 3rd ed. with an answer to some complaints against this defense. Paris, Robert et Nicolas Pepie, 1698. In-8, LI (9) pp, 570 pp, (3) ff, small wormholes on margins, contemporary fawn calf, spine ribbed and decorated. CORDIER 873. Third edition combining the two volumes published successively in 1687 and 1690. At the head of the preface, vignette by C. Vermeulen, depicting the death of S. François Xavier. Culminating episode of the "Querelle des rites", mainly between Dominicans and Jesuits, the latter being judged too complacent towards Chinese religious practices. Father Le Tellier's work was placed on the index by Rome on March 22, 1694 and December 22, 1700, pending corrections. Initially judged favorably on publication by lJacques-Charles de Brisacier, superior of the Missions étrangères, it was revoked by himself in 1700.
