NASA/Neil Armstrong - Lot 41
NASA/Neil Armstrong APOLLO 11 mission Eagle's shadow on the lunar surface, photograph taken by Neil Armstrong from his window (CDR) with a Hasselblad camera. Vintage silver print, made in 1969, plate no. AS11-39-5790. 20.5 x 25.5 cm with margins. This photograph was not published by NASA. The first black-and-white images of the astronauts on the moon were taken by a Westinghouse TV camera mounted on a strut of the Eagle lunar module, MESA (Modularized Equipment Stowage Assembly), which was operated by Armstrong on leaving Eagle. The video transmission was first sent to the Honeysuckle Creek station in Cambera, Australia, then to the Deep Space Network station in Goldstone, California. The photographic development team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, was tasked with processing the film into photographic images. The laboratory team produced a small number of prints. Armstrong's spacewalk at 7:51 pm (Houston time) on July 20, 1969: 109:23:38: Armstrong: I'm at the foot of the ladder. The LM footpads are only depressed in the surface about 1 or 2 inches, although the surface appears to be very, very fine grained, as you get close to it. It's almost like a powder. The ground mass is very fine. 109:24:12: Armstrong: Okay, I'm going to step off the LM now. 109:24:23: Armstrong: That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
