LAENNEC René [Quimper, 1781 - manoir de Ploaré, 1826], Frenc - Lot 126
LAENNEC René [Quimper, 1781 - manoir de Ploaré, 1826], French physician. Autograph letter signed, addressed to his uncle, physician at the Hospices Civils in Nantes. Paris, Thursday, 5 fructidor an XI; 4 pages in-4° with address and postmarks. He has just learned that he has passed his medical exams. "In the last few days, I have seen M. Pinel, who has shown me a great deal of friendship and has assured me that most of the professors have viewed my success with great interest. Mr. Mallé, whom I met this morning as he was about to give his lesson, told me that he had been charmed by my composition; I will be sharing the clinical medicine prize with a friend of mine, Billerey from Grenoble, but the school has decided that I should be named first, even though the initial letter of my name means that I should be named second. As for the prize for surgery, I won it outright. The prizes are very rich, and the school received 1500 fr from the Minister of the Interior. For the clinical medicine prize there are 600 fr and for the other three 300 fr each. The distribution will be made on 16 fructidor with great solemnity by the minister in the presence of the professors and the national institute."
