LAENNEC René [Quimper, 1781 - manoir de Ploaré, 1826], Frenc - Lot 124
LAENNEC René [Quimper, 1781 - manoir de Ploaré, 1826], French physician. Autograph letter signed, addressed to his father. Nantes, 18 fructidor an VI; 4 pages in-8° with postmarks. Gives news of his father and discusses the current political situation. "It's from 18 fructidor that I'm writing to you, or at this very moment, completing the preparations for the festivities to celebrate the anniversary of the fall of the journalists and the black collars, and the triumph of the government. The sledgehammer blow that crushed the thug and the daily, has left on the brains of their friends in Nantes, traces of a deep and black sorrow that envelops all their thoughts and pierces even their speeches. Yesterday evening, I was in a café where many of those people known as politicians gather, whose main occupation is to find, direct or approve of everything the rulers do, and who, by their speeches, are taken to be in sole charge of all the hopes of the State. These gentlemen, bored with following the long negotiations [...] and no longer daring to accompany Bonaparte on his unknown march through the deserts of Egypt or Arabia, amused themselves by reasoning about the day of the 18th, its causes and its effects".
