LETTER FROM AN ANONYMOUS SOLDIER IN 1796 - Lot 55
LETTER FROM AN ANONYMOUS SOLDIER IN 1796
Autograph letter signed and addressed to Mlle Rachelle Joanfon. From near Fougère, March 24, 1796. 4 pages in-4° with address.
Letter from a soldier to a dear friend, describing the Breton welcome.
"I have finally arrived, my dear friend, at M. de Puisay's headquarters, but only after much fatigue. One hundred and ten of us disembarked on the night of Monday to Tuesday the 14th of this month, and we were very happy to enter the middle of Brittany without danger, although we were surrounded and attacked several times on our way by the Carmagnoles. The bravery of the Chouans, the good intentions of the inhabitants of this whole country did us no little good on our way everywhere we found friends, men women and children gave us a thousand proofs of their joy and gratitude. But the inner joy I feel when I see these brave people is much diminished by the memory of the pleasures I used to enjoy with my beloved Rachel, everything I see and hear seems like a dream to me, I can't persuade myself that lands, seas and the enemy will separate me for long from everything I adore. By day I search with my eyes for the Corderie, the place where our tenderness was born and strengthened, where we have sworn so many times to love each other forever."
