Louis SENE (Geneva, 1747 - Paris, 1804) - Lot 58
Louis SENE (Geneva, 1747 - Paris, 1804) Portrait of Angélique Aimée de Rostaing (1757-1842), Marquise de Sémonville, in first marriage Marquise de Montholon, at age 37. Watercolor and gouache. Diameter: 6.2 cm Bears an old label on the back with the model's identity. Wear and tear. It is possible that Angélique Aimée de Rostaing was the natural daughter of the Duc de Penthièvre. Angélique-Aimée de Rostaing married in first marriage the Marquis Mathieu de Montholon (1753-1788) and in second marriage the Marquis Charles-Louis de Sémonville (1759-1839). She was the mother of General Charles Tristan de Montholon (1783-1853), companion during his exile on St. Helena and executor of Napoleon I's will. Born into a family of goldsmiths in Geneva, Louis Séné showed a precocious talent when, at the age of fifteen, he painted a portrait of Voltaire, which the sitter judged to be a fair likeness. In Paris, he was a pupil of Lagrenée. He worked mainly in Paris and Geneva, achieving some success. He also painted a few miniatures in oil.
