CHARCOT Jean-Baptiste [Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1867 - at sea, 193 - Lot 291
CHARCOT Jean-Baptiste [Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1867 - at sea, 1936], French scientist and polar explorer.
Autograph letter signed, addressed to his sister. September 19, 1933; 3 pages in-8°.
In it, he talks about his meeting with Admiral Durand-Viel, Chief of the General Staff, with whom he discusses the mission and, above all, the need for rewards, to which Charcot replies "that no report or element had been given to me enabling me to judge the value of the results, and that only the polar commission could and should judge. On the other hand, the "Pollux" and its commander Mailloux had fulfilled their role admirably".
He went on to explain that he had given a lecture at the Académie des Sciences, which had been a great success. I'll be leaving on Thursday with the "Pourquoi pas?" for the launch of the new oceanographic vessel. It'll be a real coup.
