SENGHOR Léopold Sédar [Joal, Senegal, 1906 - Verson, 2001], - Lot 239
SENGHOR Léopold Sédar [Joal, Senegal, 1906 - Verson, 2001], Senegalese poet, and President of the Republic of Senegal from 1960 to 1980.
Letter signed, addressed to Mr. Luck Estang. Dakar, December 17, 1982; 2 pages in-4°, on headed paper. Envelope enclosed. He took great pleasure in reading the collections of poems
"Corps à coeur" that Mr. Estang sent. Senghor explains that "during a survey, in 1945, of the popular poetry of the Serer ethnic group, I discovered that the love poems were the most beautiful, and that their beauty came from their brevity - two to four lines, in the manner of haiku - but also from their analogical images and the fact that they were sung in three voices, with accompaniment in thirds and fifths. Obviously, the average European will be astonished to find so much refinement, even preciosity, in a so-called "primitive" people."
