DRIEU LA ROCHELLE Pierre Eugène [Paris, 1893 - id., 1945], F - Lot 31
DRIEU LA ROCHELLE Pierre Eugène [Paris, 1893 - id., 1945], French writer.
Autograph letter signed, addressed to Alfred Cortot. 4 pages small in-4°.
"I'm out of luck. Lieutenant de Polignac passed 5 minutes ago in front of me, but as I didn't know him, I couldn't take advantage of the opportunity. His mission is to gather together all interesting documents on the American army, to pass them on to the French press and to keep your public informed [...] M. de Polignac is charged, it seems, with informing the newspapers about the life of the American soldier in the cantonments as well as in the trenches - Now my dream has been to go to war with sufficient freedom to move around, and keep here and there, to be today in the trench and tomorrow elsewhere."
The letter ends with a one-page poem entitled "Orchestre nègre".
"The Negro's drum beat in the heart of the world
and his mouth snowed with our bellicose laughter
my interest scattered
in a few stars
concentrated this evening in the ephemeral sign
traced in black by this frenetic puppet [...]".
