DIDEROT Denis [Langres, 1713 - Paris, 1784], French writer. - Lot 28
DIDEROT Denis [Langres, 1713 - Paris, 1784], French writer. Autograph letter signed [addressed to Jean-Albert Euler (1734-1800)]. October 25, 1773: 1 page in-8°. On July 6, 1762, exactly nine days after the coup d'état of June 28 that put her on the throne, Catherine II invited Denis Diderot to come to Russia to publish L'encyclopédie, which had been banned in Paris. Diderot arrived in St. Petersburg in October 1773, where he stayed for five months. Catherine II treated her guest as a "distinguished" person and spent much time with him. "I sent to the Academy, through the hands of Monsieur Stahlin, whom I believed to be its secretary, the true expression of my gratitude. If I deserved more to be called the confrere des Euler, I would perhaps be even more flattered. But there are so many graces in this cy world that one more or less is no big deal. Here are my titles Dionisius Diderot socius Academiae Berolinensis et Academiae artrium Petropolitanae. Je présente mon respectente a Monsieur votre pere, et je suis avec cette consideration distinguée que l'on doit a l'héritier de ses vertus et de son genie ".
