DIDEROT Denis [Langres, 1713 - Paris, 1784], French writer. - Lot 27
DIDEROT Denis [Langres, 1713 - Paris, 1784], French writer. Autograph manuscript. Notice sur Clairaut. [June 1765]; 3 pages in-4°. The text differs considerably from the published edition. "Clairaut was a very great geometer, almost on the same line as Euler, Fontaine, Bernoulli and d'Alembert. He had less genius than Fontaine, more accuracy and certainty, and less penetration than d'Alembert: the latter has lost, with his death, a rival who kept him constantly on his toes, and this is a great loss. Clairaut had accompanied Maupertuis to the North; Maupertuis showed him the hope of a considerable pension, and Clairaut, who set great store by affluence, ceded him all the honor of the enterprise for money, which the court paid. Clairaut was rich, but Maupertuis was painted and engraved, his head wearing a bear's cap, and flattening the globe with one hand. Clairaut had been given a very pleasant physiognomy. He was madly in love with pleasure and women".
