POTOCKI, Jan] - Ten Days in the Life of Alphonse Van-Worden. - Lot 491
POTOCKI, Jan] - Ten Days in the Life of Alphonse Van-Worden. Paris, Gide fils, 1814. 3 volumes in one vol. in-12, paper a little yellowed, red half-chag., ribbed spine, gilt tr.
The original edition was printed in 1804-1805 in St. Petersburg in two parts under the title ''Manuscrit trouvé à Saragosse. Although only a few copies were printed, it was not put on the market. This edition, still published during the author's lifetime, includes the ten days of the first part with modifications, a previously unpublished disclaimer and a fourteenth day, "Histoire de Rebecca", also previously unpublished, but without days eleven to thirteen of the second part. In fact, these had appeared the previous year with other unpublished days under the title : Avadoro. Histoire espagnole, by M.L.C.J.P. (Monsieur le comte Jean Potocki). Paris, Gide, 4 vol. in-12. Apart from a few extracts (plagiarized by Nodier and De Courchamps (alias Maurice Cousin), and a reprint of Alphonse Van-Worden's Dix Journées de la vie in 1842, the 1813-1814 editions were the only source available to readers of the ''Manuscrit trouvé à Saragosse'' in its original language until 1958, when Roger Caillois published it. Bookplates of Bibliophile Jacob and Paul Meurice. Paul Lacroix, known as le Bibliophile Jacob, during a polemic with Quérard (see Bulletin du bibliophile, p. 157 and Bibliophile belge 1867, vol. II, pp. 290-296) had attributed the Dix Journées to Charles Nodier.
