GRAINVILLE, J.-B.-Fr. Xavier Cousin de - Le Dernier homme, a - Lot 464
GRAINVILLE, J.-B.-Fr. Xavier Cousin de - Le Dernier homme, a posthumous work. 2nd ed. publ. by Charles Nodier. Paris, Ferra, Deterville, 1811. 2 vols. in-8, XII, 200, 175 pp, (1) f., qqs. russ. et brunissures, qqs. mouillages claires, half ivory vellum of the ep., gilt head.
FRÈRE II, 37. Preface by Nodier. The first edition, published in 1805, went completely unnoticed. In Amiens, Nodier met the widow of Xavier Cousin de Grainville (1746-1805), who had died tragically after the failure of his novel. He would return to this work several times in articles for Le Temps (May 1, 1831), Revue de Paris (1835), Dictionnaire de la conversation (t. XXX). It is said to be the first anticipatory tale of the end of humanity, driven to its doom by its own development and the depletion of natural resources. It also contains the oft-repeated idea of the occult scientist presiding over the world's destinies. Bookplates of Bibliophile Jacob and Paul Meurice.
