Archduke Leopold Wilhelm (1614-1662) was brother of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III, and governor of the Netherlands from 1647 to 1656. Taking advantage of the troubles of the English Revolution, he acquired the collections of the Duke of Buckingham and the Marquis of Hamilton, both containing exceptional works of Italian painting. He had them transported to Vienna in 1656. They were to become one of the jewels in the crown of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Provenance: Collection of Marquis Alphonse d'Aoust (1819-1909); by descent to the current owner.
