PIGNORIA, Lorenzo - De servis, et eorum apud veteres ministeriis, commentarius. Amsterdam, Andreas Frisius, 1674. in-12, Front, (17) ff, 582 pp, (19) ff, 15 folded plates, qqs. ill. in text, slight russeting, contemporary vellum, green marble t.p.
Lorenzo Pignoria, an Italian scholar, was born in Padua in 1571, where he died in 1631. This work is one of the best treatises of its kind, albeit written in a diffuse style. It reproduces on a fold-out plate (p. 338) a Roman Abacus, a calculating instrument that remained widely used in Europe until the 18th century (original edition in 1613 cited by ASPRAY: Computing before computers n°10 and HOOK and NORMAN, Origins of Ciberspace n°14). (Bound in the suite as in most copies:) TITI POPMAE: De operis servorum. Amsterdam, Andream Frisium, 1672. 181 pp, (4) ff, vignette on title.
