Book of Hours produced in the workshop of Jean Pichore, active in Paris from 1502 to 1520, one of the most sought-after artists of his time. He worked extensively for Cardinal d'Amboise, Archbishop of Rouen, and also for Louise de Savoie. With the assistance of numerous collaborators, he created a style that was soon to be widely followed. Of particular note are Remèdes de l'une et l'autre Fortune and Triomphes de Pétrarque, and Chants royaux for Louise de Savoie. Some examples reproduced in Zöhl (Jean Pichore Buchmaler, Graphiker und Verleger in Paris. Turnhout, Brepols, 2004) show a clear analogy in terms of composition: Le baiser de Juda, Book of Hours preserved in Trier, cathedral treasure Hs. 73, fol. 21 v (here 13 v) - La Présentation au Temple, Livre d'heures du cardinal de Bérulle, cat. Héribert Tenschert, LM IV, 2, fol. 82 v (here 47 v) - Crucifixion, Livre d'heures, New York Pierpont Morgan Library, M. 291, fol. 66 (here 39 r) - Le baiser de Juda, Book of Hours printed for Pichore and de Laistre in Paris in 1504, Berlin, Kupfertischkabinett 796 (here fol 13 v). PROVENANCE: Christophe de Marle (1485-1570) Canon of Avranches and King's Councillor to the Parliament, whose coat of arms is shown (fol. 3 v: Argent on a bend Sable charged with three sprockets Argent). On folio 23 r, the footnote reads: Incipit hore secundum usum romane edite pro magistro Cristophoro de Marle canonico abrincae. His epitaph can be found at the Blancs-Manteaux convent (see Epitaphier du vieux Paris II, n°550). Label on upper cover: ''Exposition universelle de 1867 n°4418.
