Gabriel LOPPÉ (1825-1913) The Géant glacier, below the Requin refuge, Chamonix Oil on cardboard, signed, located and dated Chamonix 1877, lower right, dedicated "To my former guide and friend François Couttet Baguette souvenir affectueux" also bottom right. lower right. Gabriel Loppé is a pioneer of Alpine art and, par excellence, the painter of the high mountains, glaciers and snow. During his explorations of the high peaks, he used to carry to take all his painting equipment with him to capture the majesty of the mountains, exploring and and capture the changing light and atmosphere at different different times of day. Loppé captures in his paintings the spectacular, ever-changing changing panorama of the glaciers each year, and although although his work is very realistic, he captures their romanticism. Our painting represents Le glacier du Géant and, more precisely, the site beneath the Cabane du Requin in Chamonix, in the heart of the Mont Blanc Blanc massif in the Alps. It is dedicated to François Couttet dit "Baguette", his friend and guide to the alpine peaks.
