Important correspondence from this painter of seascapes and landscapes, of American origin,
addressed to his merchant to whom he asks for some "galette", while informing him of the
the progress of his work.
In 1896, between August and November, Boggs worked at Grandcamp in Calvados, complaining about
sometimes too much sun cost him all his cobalt blue, sometimes too much rain prevented him from working on his
sometimes too much rain that prevents him from working on the beach. In the house where he stays with his family,
the humidity covers them with mushrooms! However he will be able to send some paintings and he already has
and he already has about twenty studies of seascapes.
To the two letters of 1897 is joined a bill emanating from the Society of the French Artists which
informs Boggs that an amateur, Mr. Wenceslas Kateneff, offers 400 frs for his painting, The Bridge
Saint-Michel.
Much of this correspondence is dated 1899, from Grandcamp where
Boggs worked from February to November. Again, he despaired of the abominable

storms!!! and cobalt is so expensive!!!"; and in postscript, he mentions the political situation,
a few weeks after the failed coup d'état of Paul Déroulède and the election of President
Émile Loubet: "Is Mr. Roquet happy with the new President? It seems to me that his friend
Déroulède is doing something stupid? When the weather finally turns bad, he is happy, having made a beautiful study of the arrival of the
a beautiful study of the arrival of the boats on the quay and the sale of the fish. And when he can,
he goes to sea, to study boats. He went to Isigny, Barfleur, Honfleur, Lisieux or
from where he brings back studies and watercolors, some of which he sends in exchange for the rent of his
or to reimburse himself for the expenses he was obliged to incur to make a house habitable where he

for his watercolors, tubes of paint, the catalog of the Jongkind sale, retouching varnish, or even plates
Photo-Hall, acknowledging receipt of the money sent to him by Levalley.
The following year, he went to the Bay of the Somme, to Abbeville and then to Amiens, always
always complaining when the weather is good, and always needing money. In the fall of 1901, he
left Nanterre and moved with his family to Autouillet, in the Yvelines.
Three letters with drawings: the one of August 20, 1896 is illustrated with a small face waving
the one of February 25, 1899 is accompanied by a sketch of marine, with indication of
colors (white and blue) and on the one of September 15, 1899, Boggs who waits for news of his friend, drew a
