18th century PROVENCAL school, entourage of Michel SERRE Virgin and Child adored by Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian Canvas 240 x 165 cm Restorations This painting depicts the Virgin and Child surrounded by two saints who protect and cure the plague. This iconography is set in the context of a plague epidemic that affected the city of Marseille and its region from 1720 to 1722. The plague killed nearly half of the population of Marseilles and a third of the population of Provence, which left a deep impression on people's memories.
