POMME, Pierre - A treatise on the vapourous affections of bo - Lot 313
POMME, Pierre - A treatise on the vapourous affections of both sexes; in which an attempt has been made to combine a balanced theory with a reliable practice based on observations. 4th ed. in which one finds the collection of the pieces published for the instruction of the Trial that the system of the author made rise among the doctors, and the answer to all the objections of the anonymous. Lyon, Benoit Duplain, 1769. 2 vols. in-12, XXIV, 533 (3) pp; (2) ff, 468 pp, (2) ff, bas. marbled boards, spine with ornamented nerves, one cap shaved, one hinge partly split, corners dull.
A famous doctor thanks to his studies on hysteria, he was in the service of Madame du Deffand and Madame de Boufflers, before being the object of lively polemics. This edition contains: Answer to the objections of the author of the Mémoires de Trévoux (pp. 449-484) and Answer to the critical reflections of an anonymous person on the Traité des vapeurs, by M. Brun, Physician at Pignans in Provence (pp. 485-533). Volume II is entirely filled with correspondence on the objections of various doctors. He advocated sedative methods in the treatment of hysteria and was mentioned by Voltaire in his article ''Démoniaque'' of the Philosophical Dictionary, not hesitating to attribute to him ''more cures than the priests of Isis and Diana or others, have ever made miracles''.
