DIDEROT Denis [Langres, 1713 - Paris, 1784], French writer. - Lot 43
DIDEROT Denis [Langres, 1713 - Paris, 1784], French writer. Autograph letter signed [addressed to Jean-Albert Euler (1734-1800)]. October 25, 1773: 1 page in-8°. On July 6, 1762, exactly nine days after the coup d'état of June 28 that put her on the throne, Catherine II invites Denis Diderot to come to Russia to publish The Encyclopedia, which had been banned in Paris. Diderot arrived in Saint Petersburg in October 1773, where he stayed for five months. Catherine II treated his guest as a "distinguished" person and spent much time with him. "I sent to the Academy, through the hands of Mr. Stahlin, whom I thought was its secretary, the true expression of my gratitude. If I deserved more to be called the confrere des Euler, I would perhaps be even more flattered. But so many graces are given in this world that one more or less is no matter. Here are my titles Dionisius Diderot socius Academiae Berolinensis et Academiae artrium Petropolitanae. I present my respect to Monsieur your father, and I am with that distinguished consideration that one owes to the heir of his virtues and genius.
