DIDEROT Denis [Langres, 1713 - Paris, 1784], French writer. Autograph manuscript. Notice sur Clairaut. [June 1765]; 3 pages in-4°. One will note great differences of texts with the published edition. "Clairaut was a very great geometer, almost on the line of Euler, Fontaine, Bernoulli and d'Alembert, he had less genius than Fontaine, more accuracy and reliability, and less penetration than d'Alembert: the latter has lost, at his death, a rival who kept him constantly on his toes, and this is a great loss. Clairaut had accompanied Maupertuis to the North; Maupertuis showed him the hope of a considerable pension, and Clairaut, who was very fond of wealth, gave him the honor of the enterprise for money that the court paid. Clairaut was rich, but Maupertuis was painted and engraved with a bear's cap on his head and flattening the globe with one hand. Clairaut was given a very pleasant physiognomy. He was madly in love with pleasure and women".
