DUELS] - Collection of press cuttings concerning duels. 6 v - Lot 310
DUELS] - Collection of press cuttings concerning duels. 6 vol. in-folio, some clippings, illus. in colour, 3 maps in vol. 5, grey perc. with ms. labels on spine. The first volume includes about 500 newspaper clippings from 1890 to 1911. Most of them mention Gabriel Letainturier-Fradin, a French high official and man of letters known for his works on duels, sports and the agricultural situation in France. There are a few letters addressed to him, written by the Travailleurs du Livre, Le Petit Niçois, the Red Cross, etc. The clippings are mainly related to duels and shooting competitions, but there are also other subjects such as sports, social problems in France and various speeches, mainly military. The second volume gathers about 300 clippings from the year 1891, exclusively on the subject of duels, in France as elsewhere, and in several languages (English, Italian, Russian, German, etc.). These are both sword and handgun duels, on foot or on horseback. Half of the extracts concern the position of Pope Leo XIII on the question, which he disapproved of entirely. The third volume, of about 400 clippings, is on the same subject as the previous one, minus the articles concerning the Pope's position. There is, for example, mention of a duel between Messrs Bodereau and Lamy, arbitrated by Clémenceau while he was still deputy of the Var. Some articles concern Aurélien Scholl, a writer and journalist. The fourth volume contains approximately 400 clippings from the year 1892. Many of the articles relate in detail the arrest and trial of the Marquis de Morès, in 1892, famous for his many duels, notably with Ferdinand-Camille Dreyfus. The trial followed the death of Captain Mayer, killed in a duel by Morès. The last few clippings report on the political debates regarding duels in France. The fifth volume contains approximately 500 newspaper clippings, all dated July 1892. This volume deals with the history of duelling, the debates that animate the political class on this subject and the laws enacted against it. The sixth and last volume, of about 500 clippings dated from 1909 to 1911, deals with the same subjects as the previous one, with the addition of articles concerning the vision of the duel in different countries (United States, Germany, Italy, etc.) and the history of the duel.
