Charles MAINDRON (1861-1940) - Lot 131
Charles MAINDRON (1861-1940) Saint-Cloud in Ruins from the Fighting of 1870, 1892 Nice albumin print with full margins, 325x260 mm The Maindron house, paper mill in Saint-Cloud, was a privileged partner of the Sevres factory, which was regularly supplied with paper since 1887. Around 1892, the museum of Sevres acquired a series of ten photographic prints for the library. Signed Charles Maindron, these photographs show the stigma of the 1870 war in Saint-Cloud, by showing the ruins of the castle. Edouard Garnier (1840-1903), curator of the Museum, entrusted the skilful and honourable photographer from Sèvres with the task of documenting the Manufacture: "As the curators of the French and foreign museums that I had the opportunity to see, as well as several amateurs, asked me on different occasions to obtain photographs of a great number of pieces of our showcases and as, on the other hand, I estimate that it is very interesting for the Manufacture to make known the richnesses which it possesses [....] I have addressed myself to M. Maindron, of Saint-Cloud, who has just reproduced in an absolutely remarkable way a series of views of the ruins of the castle, and who offers all the desirable guarantees of skill and honourability.
