Stanislas ELESZKIEWICZ (Tschoutovo 1900 - 1963 Paris) - Lot 90
Stanislas ELESZKIEWICZ (Tschoutovo 1900 - 1963 Paris) The characters in front of the big bell Oil on cardboard, signed lower left. 41 x 33 cm This Ukrainian-born artist of Polish parents settled in Paris in 1923 after having passed through Warsaw, Ahanes and Rome. In the years 1927-1945 he draws for the glass mosaic painter Jean Gaudin. He exhibited in the galleries of Montparnasse and other galleries next to Dufy, Modigliani, Utrillo and Vlaminck. Yet he remains for a long time a forgotten artist of the École de Paris. The expressionism of his canvases, in which he mostly depicts dark alleys and figures of the marginalized, make him one of the most personal artists of this school. One wonders about the meaning of this mysterious and grotesque composition. Was it inspired by the story of the world's largest bell - Tsar Kolokol in the Kremlin, which weighs more than 20 tons?
